Homelessness has put up a new face on Skid Row. If you want to know what it looks like, look in the mirror; look at your children, spouse and extended family members. The majority now here are elderly and handicapped who should be in nursing homes but are not because they can’t afford it and don’t have family to help take care of them. The next majority to no surprise is the working poor and the jobless –many with children. Foreclosures due to “this and that” type of mortgage are leaving many families homeless. In the next issue one such family will be sharing their story with us. There are a great deal of people attending college who are living homeless to save money on tuition. Some of the general stereo types are still here of course but not as the majority of the population. Skid Row is starting to look like any other neighborhood.
